Book covers designed for the individual portfolio review all NMU art & design students must pass. A love of literature and hand-lettered type was the impetus for this series.
The Complete Works of Alfred, Lord Tennyson: This cover was designed around various themes found in Tennyson's work and meant to mimic the flowing nature of ALT's poetry.
This piece of work is also on display at the Michigan House of Representative's building as part of 2016's Art in the House.
A Conspiracy of Kings: re-imagined the cover of Megan Whalen Turner's fourth novel in The Queen's Thief series, taking a more symbolic approach, with gold foil.
a full wraparound of Agatha Christie's Nemesis.
Food for Body and Soul: a local church's recipe anthology, sticking to the traditional German Lutheran fares found within.
A Halloween and occult inspired zine Mellissa and I collaborated on.
Cover. We both worked on this; some illustrations by Mell, other illustrations and typography by me.
Bad Luck for Both: Rime of the Ancient Mariner's albatross.
Atropa Belladonna: (also known as deadly nightshade.) A little botany layout of the plant.
Sarah Helen Whitman: known to hold seances, dress in all lace and black, and wear a mini coffin around her neck. She briefly courted and was courted by Edgar Allen Poe.
II The High Priestess: A tarot card illustration drawing elements from the classic Smith-Rider-Waite tarot deck as well as introducing new themes.
The Nine of Swords: another tarot illustration, this one featuring Jeanne d'Arc.
Homesick Ghosts: an exercise in hand-lettered type.
A score sheet I designed for a local opera composer. I had a lot of leeway with this, the request was that I did something similar to this Tennyson cover.
Full version of a score sheet I designed for an opera composer.
Shortened version of the score sheet.
Various options from the thumbnail stage, we went with a slightly tweaked version of #1.
The flower choices all have meaning derived from popular Victorian flower languages. There's lupin for imagination, camellia japonica for excellence, apple blossom for good fame, and oats for 'the mystic soul of music.' The bee is simply a bee.
An attempt to create a coherent body of work in regards to subject, media, and color scheme. I chose a selection of supernatural beings from the grimoire The Lesser Keys of Solomon.
“Manifesting as an angel (in this case, a throne), Duke Crocell speaks in dark and mysterious ways. He controls the temperature of waters, creates the illusion of watery sounds, and can teach the conjuror geometry.”
“Duke Dantalion knows the thoughts of all people and can change them at his will. He is depicted as a man with many faces–some say the faces of all men–and holding a book in one of his hands.”
“Appearing as a vulture with the feet of a goose, Prince Ipos can see all things past, present, and future.”
“Marquis Shax (also spelled Chax, Shan, Shass) is a demon that appears as a stork. He speaks with a hoarse voice; upon entering the summoning triangle, his voice becomes beautiful.”
Illustrated images matching the descriptions of demon princes from the Ars Goetia.
Aamon, described as having the head of a little owl, the forelegs of a lion and the body of a great serpent.
Count Raüm, described as a crow who can steal the treasures of kings.
Prince Stolas, a much beloved demon who is described as a crowned owl with long, long legs.
Concept art for a class project. Based on a alternate post-apocalyptic Earth powered by wind and saved by sunflowers.
High-quality still image.
Tiling patterns from an ongoing sketchbook exercise.
The goal is to push each pattern as close to finished as possible, all within a 1-1.5 hour time period. I love making these, and will continue to add more as time goes on!

A mock-up for the Gigantic Brewing Company's Royale beer. Although I haven't tasted it, it's supposed to have fruity, floral notes.
